On an experimental basis a small community of 3 sisters established themselves in an apartment called Jumbo Darshan in Andheri East on the 14th December 1977, to cater to the social land pastoral needs of the poor who lived in the chawls near by. The experiment did not work and the house was closed. However, the idea of working in a chawl area was not given up.

San Zeno, in Munshi Colony, Andheri is a chawl area. The need for a humble presence arose when Fr. Frederick Sopena S.J. requested the help of the Canossians. In May 1979, two rooms were acquired at Achanak Colony, Mahakali Road and Fr. Sopena stayed with them for a month. The Canossian Sisters started their activity from 12th June 1980. The initial activities of the community were giving a witness to the gospel values, pastoral, family apostolate, catechesis and teaching in both formal and non-formal schools.
