At the request of the Bishop of Belgaum, late Rt. Rev. Ignatius Lobo, and Fr. Lino D’Souza S.J. Parish Priest of Halkarni, the Canossian Sisters established a community at Halkarni which is on the border of Maharashtra, but the way of approach goes through Belgaum which belongs to Karnataka. Halkarni is a backward rural area with sugar factories in the vicinity providing some employment to the local people. The Sisters on the 08th September 1981 began by staying in a rented house. The Sisters full of zeal began by teaching catechism, hymns, conducting games and sports for children. They created a social awareness for women, began Mahila Mandals, youth groups, balwadis and tailoring classes. There was a felt need for providing facilities to the young girls who wished to study, so a boarding was opened on 12th June 1988 and is a boon to the young students. In1995, the Sisters launched out into building Small Human Groups including non-Christian groups for the empowerment of women. There is an integrated approach to development in the pastoral, social medical and educational apostolates and the fruits of hard work are slowly showing. The people are growing in the awareness of their united strength.
