THE CANOSSIAN DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY
The Institute of the Canossian Daughters of Charity springs from the ardent love of Jesus on the Cross. Inspired by this love of Jesus, St. Magdalene of Canossa started the Institute in Verona (Italy) on 8 May 1808. The motto ‘Charity in humility’ has its source in the Crucified Christ and his Sorrowful Mother. The mission of the Congregation is to bring Christ to all, especially the poor, through its life, words and services.
Today the Canossians are spread in all the 5 Continents in 27 Countries. They first arrived in India in 1889 and today they number more than 600 in the three Provinces of India North, Centre, South and delegation of Andhra. Magdalene of Canossa has also started a Congregation for men known as Canossian Sons of Charity. We are fortunate to have the Canossian Sons of Charity in India at Vasai and Goa.
The Institute witnesses the fruitfulness of the original charism through various Apostolates- Schools, Hospitals, Dispensaries, Boardings, Social Centres and Spirituality Centres. We also empower the marginalised especially women and children through the Socio-Pastoral activities and Rural Development programmes.
